This is fascinating. Octopus Energy is planning to have 18GW of #DER distributed energy resources under management aka in #VPPs Virtual Power Plants by 2030!I presume this is a global figure. It's unfortunately unclear from the article which refers to an existing 1GW VPP (Origin Energy has over 1.2GW in its VPP in Australia already - with a target of 2GW by 2026), but the article says the VPP is mostly #EVs electric vehicles implying that's discussing UK-based DER. (Or maybe a bit of both? Hopefully someone from Octopus or Origin can enlighten me?).Implications: * the 'small stuff' of DER can add up fast - and should not be underestimated* the smart money is on the tech to help DER aggregate and play in various markets* EVs are game changers for electricity systems - and should not be underestimated* we need to make sure there is policy and regulation to support managed and bidirectional charging (#V2X/ #V2G) asap to make the most of this growing mobile asset fleet - as well as the integration of DER in general* Australian DNSPs #distribution #networks need to have dynamic operating envelopes #flexibleexports in place ASAP to ensure consumers can optimise their returns from their DER and speed up the decarbonisation of the grid.Integrate To Zero, IEEFA Asia Pacific, The Superpower Institute, Solar Citizens, Parents for Climate #energytransition Jon Sibley, Energy Networks Australia,

Origin Energy was one of the surprise stocks in my newly published book Top Stocks: Ethical, Sustainable, Responsible. Whilst it is amongst the best in the energy sector, a sector that does poorly on overall ESG metrics, particularly on the E - environmental - Origin Energy seems to be taking net zero seriously and has undertaken a number of positive actions such as:*Net zero targets across all 3 scopes in line with the Paris Agreement*Renewable energy already accounts for more than 20% of their portfolio. They have power purchase agreements in place with a variety of wind and solar farms. *Ownership stake in solar power company Octopus. *Encourage their customers to decarbonise by taking up renewable energy*Plans to decommission Eraring coal plant earlier than projected, maybe as soon as 2025Whilst it is not perfect, it is looking to the future and positioning itself for a decarbonised economy. #orginenergy #ESG #responsibleinvesting #decarbonisationLink to my book. https://lnkd.in/gxFCGQ96
